PPD4 Final Essay..

Discuss the Category of Aesthetic Beauty in relation to Art Practice of the last 100 years.

Draught Introduction

Since the First World War, the nature of art and and visual aesthetics has probably evolved more then in the previous 500 years. With the development of post modernism, has a divide been created between what is seen as beauty and meaning in art, and it's visual aesthetics?
Is it possible that in comparison to 19th century works, there has been a shift from aesthetics influencing art, to art influencing aesthetics?
It is according to the areas of both Psychology and Philosophy, that we understand that the ability to make judgement on what is viewed is both learned and comparative. Could it be that over the last 100 years, the movement in art away from what was taken to be aesthetically beautiful towards works of more inner meaning has actually began to change the perceived values on which we actually make aesthetic judgements?
Is it possible that the art movements of the early 2oth century such as Dada, Cubism, and Surrealism, by moving away from making pieces that look visually beautiful, have actually changed what we see as being visually beautiful?
